Megan Downey Studio is leading a grassroots effort to bring much-needed shade to the Cleveland Park commercial corridor in Washington, DC. Recognizing both the lack of pedestrian shade and the growing impact of the urban heat island effect on the neighborhood, Megan Downey approached the nonprofit that manages the business district to develop a community-driven solution.

Using hyperlocal tulip poplar harvested from two heritage trees that had to be removed from the neighborhood, the studio designed a suspended canopy of undulating wooden louvers and tensioned cables supported by a steel frame. The installation draws inspiration from the tree canopy of nearby Rock Creek Park as well as the recently installed louvered benches along the retail corridor, creating a design that feels rooted in its surroundings.

The project aims to honor the legacy of the two heritage trees while creating a more comfortable, vibrant public space that encourages people to spend time in the neighborhood.
